Easter in Elche is celebrated with more than thirty brotherhoods and sisterhoods that participate in the events and processions during those days.
Below, we present the proposal of this wonderful experience in Elche:
Departure point: In front of the tourist office of Elche, next to the municipal park.
We will get on the tourist train that will go through the historic center of Elche. This fun ride will take you through the main streets of the city, showing you the history, architecture and highlights.
We will make a stop (C/ Porta de la Morera, 12) during the tour to visit the Palmeral Museum.
We will continue with a visit to the Palmeral Museum, which will allow you to learn more about the importance of the palm tree in the culture of Elche. In addition, you will have the opportunity to see an impressive demonstration of how the palm tree is climbed and the work of the “palmerero”, a very particular trade and a unique tradition of the region.
After the visit to the museum, we will return to the same stop where we got off our little tourist train to get back on it for the rest of the trip.
We wanted to emphasize that our Palm Sunday procession was declared in 1988 a Festival of International Tourist Interest of extraordinary beauty. It has been celebrated since at least 1371 and was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 1997, thanks to its antiquity, uniqueness and great attraction for both citizens and tourists.
And that our “White Palm” obtained by the “encaperuzamiento” of the date palms, for us is one of the great pillars of the uniqueness of the “Palmeral de Elche”, so we are facing something unique in the world. The braiding of the white palm is usually done by the women of the family, popularly known as “rizadoras”, and it is passed from generation to generation.
For all this we want you to be part of this tradition by visiting this family shop-workshop of great artisans, where you can see first hand how the traditional white palms have been made. On this visit, you will receive a special gift: a white lapel palm as a souvenir of this unique experience.
Entering the Basilica of Santa Maria, a building of great historical and architectural value, you will know a piece of our heritage and the holy week of Elche and you can enjoy the solemnity and beauty of one of the most important temples of Elche, as it is where our “Misteri d'Elx” is performed during the August festivities.
During the experience, you can choose and enjoy a salty picnic in an artisan bakery, which includes a delicious salty coca, typical of the town and soft drink or you can opt for an artisan ice cream parlor, to sweeten your visit taking a slush (lemon, horchata (Tigernut milk) or prepared milk (milk prepared with sugar, cinnamon and lemon peel)) and a sweet coca or fartons.
